Two couples stopped in for lunch shortly after we opened, but after they left, the tearoom was empty for the next hour. I spent the time making an English trifle, something I’d always wanted to do. I’d baked the cake the day before, so now all I had to do was make the custard and assemble everything.

I smiled at my optimism which I hoped wasn’t misplaced. Nearly every recipe I’d tried lately that required custard had been a flop, but I wasn’t going to let that stop me. Taking it slowly, I read every instruction twice. After an hour in the refrigerator, I took the custard out and tasted it. Much to my relief, it tasted delicious. Soon I had a beautiful glass bowl filled with layers of cake, custard, strawberries, and cream.

Late in the afternoon, three sisters arrived with their mother for afternoon tea. When I learned that it was the mother’s birthday, I suggested the SereniTea Queen’s Afternoon Tea with champagne.

As I cleared their plates, I announced I had something special for them. I pulled the bowl of trifle from the refrigerator and scooped four servings, putting a candle in the middle of the mother’s bowl, happy to see that it stayed in place.

We all sang “Happy Birthday” and they dug into their trifle. They gobbled it down and complimented me on it along with the rest of their meal. When they left, Jennifer and I were alone again.

“We’ve got to figure out how to get more people coming in during the off season,” I said as I carried the last of the plates to the kitchen. “Or maybe cut back to three days a week.”

“Oh,” Jennifer said, sounding concerned. “What would you do with the free time?”

“Don’t worry. I’ll keep you busy forty hours a week as long as you want to keep working here. But it might be nice to try my hand at something else. Something creative.”

“I know,” Jennifer said. “You could start a true-crime podcast.”

I nearly laughed but considering how much true crime had occurred in our little town recently, it wasn’t all that farfetched. “I’m hoping the murder rate goes back down to zero. I was thinking more like taking up painting or writing.”

Before calling it a day, I always liked to take inventory to make sure we were ready if we happened to get a rush of customers the next day. We were nearly out of lunch items, so I put potatoes on the stove to boil.

By the time I’d assembled several mini shepherd’s pies, I was ready for my own dinner. Irma had suggested I stop by the Mermaid Cafe, but I itched to get to the castle to see what else I could learn.

Telling Jennifer I was going for a drive, I grabbed my keys and stepped outside, surprised to see the sun low in the sky. It would be dark by the time I arrived, and I considered putting the visit off until the next morning. I shook off my apprehension and got in the car.
